CHAPEL HILL N.C. – Behind a career-high 18 saves by
Jennifer Wisniewski, Radford hung with a high-powered North Carolina squad into the second half, but fell to the second-ranked Tar Heels (18-1), 5-0 in the regular season finale for both squads.
Wisniewski stopped 12 of those shots, which was her previous career-best, in the first half and kept the Tar Heels (18-1) off the scoreboard for almost 30 minutes. Sinead Loughran finally solved Wisniewski with the first goal of the match at 29:33.
Along with the 12 stops by Wisniewski, Radford's (8-10) defense stood their ground in the first stanza with three more defensive saves by
Jennifer Balka,
Becca Devlin and
Megan Lenhardt.
Coming out of the half down just one, Radford had two great scoring chances to get on the board and even the match. On a corner in the 38th minute, Niamh Connolly's shot was stopped by Tar Heel keeper Jackie Kintzer and the rebound by Lenhardt scooted wide.
Wisniewski would make three mores saves before North Carolina pushed its advantage to 3-0 on goals by Elizabeth Stephens and Caitlin Van Sickle 50 seconds apart. The Tar Heels addrf two more for the final margin.
The Tar Heels ripped off 38 shots, but Radford's defense, along with the 21 saves, tipped and blocked several UNC attempts throughout the match.
Radford, the third seed in the East at the 2010 NorPac Championship, will open up play on Nov. 4 against the west's two seed, California, at 6:30 pm. The tournament is being hosted by Davidson College and will be held Nov. 4-6 at Belk Turf Field.
