RADFORD, Va. – Radford scored three goals in the first 10:40 and never looked back as it toppled Appalachian State, 4-1, in NorPac field hockey action, Friday evening from RU Hockey Field.
Junior Lynsey Daughtrey provided her first two goals of the season, including the opening tally just 1:09 into the contest to spark the Highlanders' (8-4, 2-2 NorPac East) relentless offensive attack which ended up with one-sided advantages in both shots (21-3) and corners (13-4).
Daughtrey found pay dirt in the second minute when she deflected a shot by classmate Madonna Wadolowski high into the cage. It was Wadolowski's team-leading seventh assist of the season.
With the Highlanders already up 2-0, Daughtrey scored again when she slammed home a rebound during a corner at 10:40. It was the first multi-goal game of the junior's career.
Just four minutes after Daughtrey's first tally, sophomore Jennifer Balka got in on the scoring when she redirected a shot off of the stick of senior Lara Cariker. The eventual game-winner was her third score of the season.
Radford would take the 3-0 advantage into halftime as ASU keeper Bridgette Street made seven of her nine saves in the first 35 minutes of action to stop any more Highlanders scores.
In the first half, the Highlanders recorded 16 shots and 12 corners. With much of the play in the Radford end, Appalachian State was held without a corner and just two shots (both coming after first goal) in the first stanza.
Wadolowski closed the scoring for the Highlanders when she cleaned up Cariker's shot off the post in the 40th minute.
Kelly Allaband spoiled the shutout in the 63rd minute when she got a stick on Lauren Kloeppinger's shot during ASU's third straight corner.
Radford keeper Jennifer Wisniewski was not tested much as she made one save late in the game.
The Highlander hit the road on Sunday for a tilt with James Madison at 1 p.m. It will be head coach Jeff Woods' 500th game roaming the sidelines for the Highlanders.
Just prior to tonight's game, Woods was recognized for earning his 200th career win on Sep. 25 at Longwood. He was presented with a stick and plaque commemorating the milestone.
