RADFORD, Va. – Playing its second game in as many days to open the 2010-11 campaign, Radford placed six players in double figures, including 15 points from
Tommy Spagnolo (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County), as the Highlanders defeated Methodist 83-74 in non-conference men's basketball action Sunday at the Dedmon Center.
In addition to his second straight 10-point performance, Spagnolo grabbed 10 rebounds (6 offensive) for his first career double-double.
Jeremy Robinson (Baltimore, Md./Tallahassee C.C.) added 13 points, including a crucial 3-pointer late in the contest with the shot clock running out that put Radford back up seven, 75-68. The senior point guard also recorded a game-high seven assists off the bench.

Evan Faulkner (Sandy Hook, Ky./Elliott County) scored 12 points,
Gorkem Sonmez (Istanbul, Turkey/St. Mary's Ryken) netted 11 points, and
Johnathan Edwards (Queens, N.Y./Tyler Junior College) and
Jareal Smith (Savannah, Ga./Johnson) chipped in with 10 each.
Trailing 27-24 with 3:36 left in the opening half, Radford (2-0) closed the period on an 11-2 run capped off by
Daniel Mitchell's (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) second career 3-pointer, which sent the Highlanders into the break up, 35-29.
Radford, which had eight different players score in the first 20 minutes, went 12-of-17 from the free throw line in the half.
A Spagnolo dunk with 5:31 to play gave the Highlanders their largest lead of the contest, 68-58.
Methodist cut the deficit to two on several occasions in the second half, including 70-68 on a Kyle Combs' trey, but the Highlanders stretched the margin back to nine.
For the second straight game,
Jamal Curry (Charleston, S.C./Porter Gaud School) led the Highlanders in rebounding with a career-high 11.
Along with shooting 50 percent in the second half, Radford finished the contest 30-of-48 from the line.
Both clubs shot just under 43 percent for the game.
The Highlanders finished with a commanding 54-37 advantage on the glass.
Kombs led three Monarchs in double figures with a game-high 16 points as a reserve, while Tanner Carnes charted a double-double of his own with 15 points and 12 boards.
Radford will enjoy a five-day break before traveling to Columbia, S.C. for a Friday evening tilt at South Carolina. The 7 p.m. contest between the Highlanders and Gamecocks will be televised on Fox Sports Carolinas.
