MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston jumped on Radford with five first-inning runs and never looked back in a 9-1 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Park.
For the second straight game, a big inning was costly for the Highlanders (0-2), who surrendered five in the bottom of the first. College of Charleston (2-0) tacked on four more in the fourth and Radford never answered, as five Cougar pitchers allowed one run on five hits.
Left-hander
Paul DeVito (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) took the loss (0-1) and was chased from the game after College of Charleston manufactured five runs on four hits in the first inning.
David Peterson (1-0) allowed no earned runs on three hits in four scheduled innings in his start to pick up the victory. Four Cougar relievers silenced the Highlanders, allowing just two hits the rest of the way.
Four College of Charleston hitters had multi-hit days, led by Kolby Epley's three RBI afternoon. Jesse Mesa and Jose Rodriguez had two RBIs each for the Cougars, with Rodriguez driving in a pair on a two-out double in the decisive first inning.
Matt Mack (Davidsonville, Md./St. John's College High School) led the Highlanders with two hits and
Reggie Keen (Danville, Va./G.W.-Danville) scored the only Radford run of the day on an error by catcher Rob Kral in the fourth inning.
