RADFORD, Va. – Behind solid pitching performances and a 21-hit attack, Radford swept Charleston Southern in Big South softball action Saturday afternoon from RU Softball Field.
The duo of
Chelsea Kelley and
Kellie Snooks held Charleston Southern (16-17-1, 0-2 Big South) to one run on seven hits (six singles) in the two games.
Offensively, the Highlanders (15-9, 4-1) recorded 12 extra base hits (eight doubles, four home runs) and had four players knock in three runs.
Radford also had a strong defensive game, committing zero errors and making several nice defensive plays in the two contests.
Radford scored two runs in each of the first three innings and pounded out 11 hits, seven for extra bases, in a 7-1 game one victory.
Kristen Shifflett went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run. She knocked in three runs and scored three as well.
Taylor Cunningham and
Nichole Beall each had two hits with Cunningham scoring a pair of runs.
Kelley earned the complete game victory. She allowed just four hits and struck out three to improve to 10-4.
Radford jumped on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first courtesy of an RBI single by Beall and a two-out solo home run to left by
Shannon Keefe.
Erin Kegley responded for CSU, leading off the second with a solo shot to centerfield.
The Highlanders added two more in the second on RBI doubles by Shifflett and
Sarah Himan. Cunningham who led the frame off with her team-leading eighth two-bagger, scored on Shifflett's hit.
A bases loaded walk and hit batsman pushed two runs across for Radford in the third, making it 6-1.
Shifflett closed out the scoring for the Highlander with her fourth long ball of the season, a solo shot to rightcenter.
Kristen Kelleher recorded two of CSU's four hits. Sondra Vetter suffered the defeat lasting just 2.1 innings. She surrendered six runs, five earned, on eight hits with three walks.
In game two, Snooks recorded her third consecutive shutout at home, in an 8-0 sixth inning victory.
Creasy and
Meredith Moore went 2-for-3. Moore had three RBI and Creasy scored twice.
Snooks allowed three hits, struck out three and walked a batter. CSU did not record a hit until two outs in the fourth, which ended an 11-inning no-hit streak at home for Snooks. The shutout extended her home shutout streak to 18.1 innings.
A two-out, two-run double by Himan in the third gave Radford a 2-0 lead. The Highlanders added two more in the fourth on a two-run blast to dead center by Moore.
Cunningham capped the game off in a four-run sixth, rocketing a three-run long ball off the light pole in left. Two batters earlier Moore knocked in the first run of the inning with a single just inside the rightfield line.
Kelleher, Kegley and Melissa Adams singled for the Buccaneers. Kimberly Hobbs suffered the loss, striking out one.
Game three of the series is scheduled for tomorrow, March 28 at 10 am. It has been rescheduled due to the inclement weather heading into the area.
