BOX SCORE
RADFORD, Va. – Siena pushed across three runs in the 12th inning on the way to a 9-6 win over Radford in the finale of a non-conference series on Sunday.
The game, rescheduled from 1 p.m. to 10:30 a.m., lasted 3:40 and was played in a steady rain.
The Saints (9-13) scored the winning run in the 12th when Mike Fish singled home Andrew Sawyer with one out, making it a 7-6 lead for Siena. After Mike Paolini was walked intentionally to set up an inning-ending double play the next hitter, Kevin Quaranto, hit a two-run single to give the Saints insurance.
Dan Miklas, who held Radford hitless in the final two innings, earned the win (1-0).
Siena banged out 21 hits and had five players pick up three or more hits, led by Paolini with his 4-for-6 day. Quaranto drove in three runs, going 2-for-6.
The Highlanders (12-9) had 10 hits of their own and four players with multi-hit afternoons, led by
Tyren Rivers with his four RBIs. Rivers hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning with two outs, cutting Siena's lead to 6-5.
The Highlanders got eight-plus innings of scoreless relief from the bullpen.
Brad Wimmer tossed two scoreless frames, while
Abram Williams had three.
Jason Patten, who made his second appearance in two days, worked the final four innings and suffered the loss (0-2).
Siena right-handed starter Zach Hartman, who went 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision, escaped a pair of bases-loaded jams. After Radford got two runs in the third inning on one-out RBI hits by Rivers and
Reggie Keen, Hartman struck out
Raphael Turner, then walked
Matt Mack to load the bases. Hartman came back to get
Alex Guerra on strikes, ending the Radford threat.
In the fifth, Radford brought the tying run to the plate with one out after Matt Hillsinger's leadoff single, a walk to Rivers and Turner's one-out single to shallow left field, stopping Hillsinger at third. Hartman got the next two hitters in order, stranding the bases loaded for the second time.
The Saints plated runs in each of the first two innings and used a big fourth to open a 6-0 lead, fueled by four singles and a pair of Radford errors. Gary DerHagopian, Kyle Baldani and Mike Allen had back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 5-0 Siena lead, and the Saints added another on a wild pickoff throw to build a six-run cushion.
Siena had a chance to add more in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Williams worked out of the jam, putting Quaranto on intentionally to set up a ground ball double play, which he got from Larry Balkwill to end the inning and keep the score 6-5.
In the home half, the Highlanders loaded the bases again, pushing home the tying run but not the go-ahead. With two on and one out, Siena brought Anthony Giansanti in from right field to pitch, walking both Keen and Turner and walking in the tying run. But Giansanti got the next two hitters, stranding the bases full for the third time.
Radford continues non-conference play on Tuesday, traveling to James Madison for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
