Radford plays its third consecutive midweek game on the road on Tuesday, traveling to James Madison to play in brand-new Veterans Memorial Park at 6:30 p.m.
The Highlanders and Dukes were originally scheduled to meet in Harrisonburg during the first week of the season on Feb. 23, but the game was re-arranged due to snowy conditions in Western Virginia.
Of late, Radford has been successful against JMU. In
Joe Raccuia's previous two seasons at the helm, the Highlanders are 5-1 against the Dukes, including a sweep of last year's home-and-home midweek games. JMU has a 23-18 series advantage over Radford, all-time.
JMU is playing its first season in Veterans Memorial Park, the first new facility the Highlanders are visiting in 2010. Each of the previous series contests played in Harrisonburg (dating back to 1989) were at Long Field/Mauck Stadium, the former home of the Dukes. Veterans Memorial Park is also the first all-artificial surfaced field that Radford will play on this season.
Despite Sunday's loss in the series finale with Siena, Radford is 8-2 in its last 10 games. Five Radford players are hitting better than .300 over the last 10, led by
Matt Hillsinger's .464 pace (13-for-28).
Raphael Turner has extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 19 for his last 44 (.432), and
Reggie Keen has 11 RBIs in his last 10 games, hitting .359 over that stretch.
Radford's relief pitching has been key during the last 10 games, highlighted by the efforts of right-handers
Brad Wimmer,
Abram Williams and
Jason Patten. Wimmer's ERA over the last 10 games is 0.79, with just one earned run allowed over his last nine outings (15 2/3 innings). Williams has tossed three scoreless outings over the last 10 games (9 2/3 innings, 0 R) and Patten has a 3.00 ERA along with two saves (five appearances).
Entering Tuesday's game, the Dukes are 5-1 in their last six games and 7-3 in their last 10. Over the weekend, JMU took two of three from George Mason, a team that beat the Highlanders 9-5 in Salem on March 9. JMU and Radford share common opponents this season in top-ranked Virginia (L), Liberty (W), Coastal Carolina (L) and Longwood (W), VMI (W) and Mason (2-1) – the Dukes are 5-3 against that group already.
Third baseman Matt Browning leads the Dukes at the plate this season with a .460 batting average through 22 games, third-best in the Colonial Athletic Association.
