CLEARWATER, Fla. – Radford scored five unanswered runs to defeat Toledo, 5-1, and earn a split on the first day of the Under Armour Invitational hosted by USF at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. The win came following a 4-1 setback to UAB in the opener.
After Toledo took an early lead on Lacey LeVier's solo home run in the top of the first, Radford scored five unanswered runs, including three in the fourth, to snap an early season four-game slide.
Nichole Beall (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) responded in the bottom half of the first with her fifth home run of the season, knotting the game at 1-1.
Junior
Shannon Keefe (Lemont Township, Ill./Lemont) gave Radford the lead for good with an RBI double in the third.
In the three-run fourth,
Michelle Beall (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) and
Taylor Cunningham (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) singled and doubled to start the inning.
Williams followed with an RBI double to left center, the first extra base hit of her career. Cunningham had to hold up and moved up to third.
Junior
Kristen Shifflett (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had her home run attempt robbed in left, but both Cunningham and Williams were able to scoot home as the leftfielder crashed through the fence.
Keefe, Cunningham and
Nichole Beall all had two hits for the Highlanders. Beall recorded a double and a home run, her fifth of the seasons, while Cunningham registered a pair of two-baggers.
Junior
Chelsea Kelley (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) picked up the win in five innings of work. She allowed three hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Williams and
Nichole Beall each had four hits on the day.
In the opening contest, UAB (10-4) broke open a 1-1 ball game with a three-run fifth to defeat Radford, 4-1.
Just after the Highlanders tied the game in the top half of the inning, the Blazers recorded four hits including a RBI double from Cameron Skates and a run-scoring single by Kayla Orr to retake the lead.
Those hits provided insurance runs after UAB went ahead when Sallie Van Kirk tagged on a pop up behind the second base bag.
Alisha Smith picked up the complete game nine-strikeout win for the Blazers. She scattered eight hits, seven of them singles, and did not walk a batter.
Orr, Skates and Martina Landrum each recorded a pair of hits for the Blazers. Skates scored two runs and Orr knocked in a pair.
Williams was a career-high 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored for the Highlanders.
Nichole Beall registered a pair hits including a RBI double.
The Blazers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by Orr.
After stranding four runners in scoring position in the first four innings, Radford took advantage of Williams' second hit of the game. Following a groundout that moved her to second, Beall tied the contest at 1-1 with her double to right center.
Radford put runners on base in six innings, stranding seven runners, all in scoring position.
Junior
Kellie Snooks (Alsip, Ill./Marist) suffered the defeat in relief, allowing three runs on four hits. She struck out two and walked one in 2.2 innings of work.
Radford returns to action tomorrow at 5 and 7 p.m. against St. Joseph's and Villanova.
