Radford begins a stretch of 11 games over 15 days while closing out a five-game homestand when the Highlanders entertain James Madison on Tuesday and Longwood on Wednesday. Both games begin at 3 p.m.
This is the first time in 2010 that Radford will play two midweek games, closing out a stretch of five consecutive home games and 10 of the last 12 on the Highlanders' home field.
Radford will also work to snap a four-game losing streak. In a sweep by Liberty over the weekend, Radford outhit the Flames 36-31 but was outscored 20-10.
Matt Hillsinger, who carries a five-game hitting streak into the week, has multi-hit efforts in five of his last seven games, including four games in a row.
Tuesday is the second meeting this season with JMU, while Wednesday is the first of two in a home-and-home series with Longwood.
In the first game between Radford and JMU, the Dukes took an early lead on David Herbek's first inning grand slam, never looking back in a 9-2 non-conference win on March 30. Herbek swatted his bases-clearing homer after the first three JMU hitters reached, putting the Highlanders in an early hole. Trevor Knight added a two-run blast over the right center field wall in the second inning, giving the Dukes a 6-0 lead.
Reggie Keen led the Highlanders at the plate, going 3-for-5.
Andrew Cook hit his first home run of the season, a solo blast to lead off the second inning.
After dropping both of its midweek games last week, including a Wednesday contest at VMI (L 2-3), JMU swept William & Mary in a CAA series over the weekend. Matt Browning, who had the walk-off hit in the 11th inning for the Dukes on Sunday, continues to lead JMU with a .406 average. Knight's nine homers lead the team, while Herbek's 31 RBIs are tops for the Dukes.
Wednesday's game with Longwood will be the first matchup between the two since a rainy affair in Radford on April 14, 2009. The Highlanders rallied from behind to score 11 runs from the sixth inning on, and got eight innings of work from starter
Paul DeVito to earn a 12-5 win over the Lancers. In a game marked by consistent rainfall from the fifth inning on, the Highlanders rallied from down 4-1 by adding a pair of runs in the sixth, three more in the seventh, and six (including four unearned) in the eighth.
Longwood, which continues at seven-game road trip on Tuesday at George Mason before heading to Radford on Wednesday, is winners of four straight entering the week. The Lancers swept a three-game set at LeMoyne over the weekend, taking the first from the Dolphins in 12 innings before back-to-back 5-2 wins to close out the series. Phil Cerreto, who was one of the top 50 hitters in the nation in batting average last week, upped his average 30 points last week and is hitting .462 entering this week.
Following the two games this week, the Highlanders will play a three-game weekend series away from home for the first time since opening weekend, traveling to High Point for three games beginning Friday night.
