SOFTBALL BEGINS 15-GAME ROAD SWING AT COASTAL CAROLINA


RADFORD, Va. -- Radford gets back into Big South play this weekend when it heads to Coastal Carolina for a three-game series a CCU Softball Field. Saturday's twinbill at 1 p.m. begins a 15-game road swing to end the regular season.

The first place Highlanders (26-10, 11-1 Big South) enter the weekend series agaisnt the Chanticleers (20-21, 2-4) on a 10-game winning streak after dropping rival Virginia Tech, 9-3, at home on Wednesday.

These will be a key three games for the Highlanders as they play on the field which is hosting the 2010 Big South Softball Championship held May 13-15 in Conway, S.C.

Last season, Radford swept all three games against Coastal Carolina at RU Softball Field. Following an 8-3 game one win, the Highlanders edged the Chanticleers in a pair 3-2 triumphs.

Offensively, six Highlanders are batting .300 or better with all nine starters recording at least 10 RBI. Shannon Keefe and Sarah Himan are tops on the team in batting at .408 and .407, respectively and are tied for the team lead with 29 RBI.

Nichole Beall has hit a league-high 12 home runs, followed by Hope Creasy and Kristen Shifflett with 10 and eight. Shifflett is also tops in the Big South with 40 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

In the circle, Chelsea Kelley is conference best 16-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 120.2 inning of work. She has 89 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .243 against her.

The Chanticleers are under the direction of first-year head coach Kelley Green and are led at the plate by Jazmin Daigle's league-best .413 batting average. She has tallied eight doubles, five home runs and a team-best 23 runs and 22 RBI. Ashley Pisone has launched a team-high eight long balls.

Ashley Frederick and Katelin Edwards see the majority of the innings in the circle. Both have earned 10 wins with Frederick recording a team-best 102 strikeouts and 2.47 ERA in 144.1 innings. Edwards has tossed five shutouts and struck out 67 in 98.2 innings of work.

Game three of the series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
