BASEBALL TOPS GARDNER-WEBB 6-5 IN FIRST GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Radford scored three runs in the final two innings, capped by Alex Guerra's (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) RBI single in the ninth, and the Highlanders scored a come-from-behind victory for the second straight game with a 6-5 win over Gardner-Webb in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

After scoring three runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Highlanders (28-21, 15-8 Big South) got three more in the top of the ninth, loading the bases before Tyren Rivers and Guerra strung together back-to-back RBI singles to give the Highlanders the go-ahead run.

The tying single was the second hit of the day for Rivers, who was 2-for-4, and Guerra's go-ahead single was his only hit.  Brett Mollenhauer went 2-for-3, scoring twice and drawing a pair of walks.   He drove in a run on a misplayed ground ball at short in the ninth, making it a one-run game.

Reggie Keen added a pair of hits, going 2-for-5, while Matt Mack was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs on his double off the wall in left field with two outs in the eighth.

Gardner-Webb (22-27, 8-15) broke open a scoreless game in the sixth inning, scoring four runs with two outs.  John Harris' RBI single put the Bulldogs on the board, Benji Jackson brought home Harris, and Daniel Merck hit a two-run double to open up a four-run lead late in the game.

Jackson and Merck had two RBIs each, and Jackson and Adam McFarland each went 2-for-4.

Cassidy McDaniel earned his first win of the season for the Highlanders (1-1) in an inning and a third of relief.  Jason Patten put together a scoreless ninth, getting the final out with the tying run on third to preserve the win and earn the save (5).
