FIELD HOCKEY BLANKS DEFENDING MAC CHAMPS, OHIO, IN SEASON OPENER

Box Score

ATHENS, Ohio – Marlee Schramm scored in the 17th minute and Jennifer Wisniewski made five saves as Radford knocked off the defending Mid-American Conference champions, Ohio, 1-0, Friday afternoon from Peggy Pruitt Field.

The lone goal of the match came when Schramm ripped a reverse stick off the side boards at 16:31 after receiving a feed from junior Courtney Poole.

Radford (1-0) would hold on as Wisniewski made four more saves the rest of the way for the season-opening victory.

Ohio (0-1) came into the contest ranked 29th after receiving 47 votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll.

Wisniewski made four of her five saves in the first half, registering the senior's ninth career shutout. Three of those first half stops came after the goal during six-minute span when the Bobcat generated three corners and three shots on goal.

After withstanding an early second half offensive surge (five shots, three corners) by the Bobcats, the Highlanders settled down and limited Ohio to just three shots over the final 19 minutes.

One of those shots nearly found the cage, but Megan Lenhardt thwarted the Katherine Ballard's scoring opportunity with a defensive save. Off an Ohio corner, the senior deflected Ballard's shot up and over the cage to preserve the one-goal lead with just under eight minutes to go.

Lenhardt set the program's single-season defensive save mark with eight stops in 2009.

Schramm paced Radford with a game-high three shots as the Highlanders generated seven shots on the day. The Bobcats recorded 13 shots and were led by Louzeth Schutte, Brooke Edwards and Taylor Brown with three apiece.

Courtney Seiders made four saves for the Bobcats. Ohio also held a slight advantage in corners, 9-8.

Radford returns to action, tomorrow, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. when it faces off against Saint Louis at Pruitt field.
