LATE GOAL SENDS FIELD HOCKEY TO FIRST DEFEAT OF SEASON

Box Score

TOWSON, Md. – Radford dropped its first contest of the season as Towson used a late goal to defeat the Highlanders, 1-0, Friday evening from Johnny Unitas® Stadium.

Robin Fencel's goal off a corner at the 60-minute mark was the decisive tally as the Tigers (3-2) won their third straight match.

Radford (4-1) had several scoring opportunities throughout the contest as it generated 11 corners and eight shots, but three defensive saves, all on corners, and three saves by Towson keeper Whitney Clugston kept the Highlanders scoreless for the first time this season

Despite holding advantage in both shots (5-2) and corners (8-3), Radford was unable to dent the scoreboard in the first stanza. The teams went into the break deadlocked at zero as a pair of Towson defensive saves and one stop by Clugston stymied Highlander scoring opportunities.

Both defensive saves, along with a blocked shot came as Radford earned four corners in the final 3:48 of the half.

After a Megan Lenhardt attempt was blocked, a pair of Marlee Schramm strikes were stopped by Kim Schnell and Janine Kovach, respectively.

Both of Towson's shots came on corners, but one was blocked and the other sailed wide.

In the second half, Radford got off three early shots but Clugston turned away chances by junior Courtney Poole and Lenhardt then Samm McElvaney recorded the Tigers third defensive save of the night on a corner shot by senior Lara Cariker.

That would be the last shot for the Highlanders as they generated just two more corners over the final 28:36.

Schramm paced Radford with three shots, while Lenhardt and Poole each attempted two. Jennifer Wisniewski made one save for the Highlanders.

Radford heads to Loretto, Pa. on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match with Saint Francis (Pa.).
