WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Senior
Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School) fired a one-under 71 and the Radford women's golf team sits just two strokes out of third place following a season-low 301 on day one of the Great Smokies Collegiate Saturday.
The two-day / 36-hole event is being played on the Par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country Club layout.
After going out in even par, Coles shot 35 on her inward nine and will enter the final round just two strokes off the lead, currently held by four golfers.
As a team, the Highlanders are currently in 9th place out of 24 teams, but just two strokes separate them from third, currently occupied by Appalachian State and Old Dominion.
Jacksonville State (289) holds the top spot on the team leaderboard by five shots over Bowling Green (294).
Junior
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) is tied from 39th following a four-over 76, while
Amy McCollum (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) and
Paige Reese (South Hill, Va. / Park View) are just one back of their teammate after rounds of 77.
Also competing for the Highlanders is freshman
Kirsty Condon (Lincolnshire, England / Kesteven and Sleaford), who opened with an eight-over 80.
The second and final round is scheduled for Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
