FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO LONGWOOD, 3-1

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. Radford field hockey got a first-half goal from senior Lynsey Daughtrey (Guffolk, Va./Lakeland) on “Senior Day”, but Longwood countered with two second-half goals to upend the Highlanders, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at RU Hockey Field.

A penalty stroke at 37:31 by Stacey de Grandhomme of Longwood proved to be the difference in the game.  The Lancers would tack on the insurance goal at 65:28 to finalize the scoring.

Appropriately, a senior connection recorded the game-tying goal (1-1) 2:08 before halftime.  After setting up a penalty corner, Daughtrey made a run towards the cage and chipped in the score after receiving a pass from classmate Melissa Register (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper).  Madonna Wadolowski (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahan) set up the scoring opportunity from the right side by playing it in to Register who found Daughtrey.

19:38 into the match, Longwood's Jessica Diaz tallied the first score of the game when she weaved through three defenders and blasted a shot in the lower left cage.

The Highlanders had a number of chances off six corners in the first frame, but couldn't capitalize.

“I felt we left a few out there today,” commented head coach Jeff Woods.  “We had some nice looks and it's unfortunate we couldn't put any away.  We have to be able to finish and that was the difference in the game.”

Radford held the edge in corners, 10-8, while Longwood controlled the shot column 13-11.

Prior to the game, Register, Daughtrey, Wadolowski, Marlee Schramm (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford), Courtney Poole (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester), Ellie Staples (Newport News, Va./Menchville) and Niamh Connolly (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) were all honored in their final home game.

Radford returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 18 when it takes on ACC-foe Wake Forest with a 7 p.m. start.
