FIELD HOCKEY TOPPED AT DAVIDSON, 2-1

BOX SCORE

DAVIDSON, N.C. –
Radford field hockey scored on the match's first shot, but Davidson responded with two first-half goals and then held on for a 2-1 victory in the final regular season contest for both squads, Saturday afternoon from Belk Turf Field.

The Wildcats (10-7, 4-2 NorPac), which outshot the Highlanders (7-11, 2-4) 10-1 in the first stanza, grabbed a 2-1 lead going into half, scoring a pair of goals after Radford took the early 1-0 lead.

On the first corner and shot of the match, senior Melissa Register  (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) staked the Highlanders to a 1-0 lead just 2:57 into the match. She deflected classmate Marlee Schramm's (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) shot into the cage for her team-leading eighth goal. It would prove to be Radford's only shot and corner of the half.

Annie Evans knotted the game at 1-1 in the 18th minute and the Wildcats went on top for good at the 33:11 mark as Christine Rua struck with the game-winner on a corner.

Radford, which out shot Davidson, 6-3 in the second stanza, had two late chances to even the match, but Register's and Schramm's, on a corner, shots were stopped by Davidson keeper Sarah Fisher, who finished the day with three saves, all coming in the second half.

The Wildcats outshot the Highlanders 13-7, while each team earned six corners. Schramm and Register each recorded two shots for Radford.

Radford heads to Stanford, Calif. for the 2011 NorPac Championships hosted by Stanford University from Nov. 3-5 at University Turf Field. The Highlanders will be the three seed in the East and face 16th ranked California on Thursday at 9:30 EST.
