RADFORD BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT ETSU

BOX SCORES: GAME 1 | GAME 2

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.Alex Guerra went 4-for-7 with a home run and four RBIs and Matt Hillsinger was 5-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs over two games to lead Radford in a doubleheader split with East Tennessee State on Tuesday, winning the nightcap 9-4 after dropping the opener 7-4.

Radford is 13-7 following the split, while ETSU sits at 13-5.

“It's a tough doubleheader to sweep, ETSU is pretty good,” head coach Joe Raccuia said. “To come back and rally after a disappointing approach to game one is a good way to battle back.

“They are a really good offensive team – you need to score a lot of runs to feel safe against them. And in game two, we jumped on them early and got big hits all the way around. We didn't pitch well in the first game, but better in game two. Those four guys [Brad Wimmer, Jason Patten, Jake Quigg, Abram Williams] who are going to be working to get us wins out of the bullpen pitched well in game two.”

GAME 1: ETSU 7, RADFORD 4

Dylan Pratt's two-run homer in the first inning tied the game at 2-2, and Bo Reeder hit a three-run blast in the second to give the Buccaneers the lead for good in a game one win.

Pratt's home run with two outs tied it after Hillsinger hit a solo homer to lead off the game, his fourth of the year, and Guerra added a two-out RBI single to make it a 2-0 Radford lead after the first half inning.

ETSU added two more runs in the third for insurance on Matthew Scruggs' run-scoring triple and Kerry Doane's sacrifice fly, which brought in Scruggs to make it 7-2.

Radford brought more two runs to the plate in the fourth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Jake Taylor and Carl Travers.

Clinton Freeman earned the win (1-1) for the Buccaneers in his four-inning start while Reeder got the final three outs in the seventh for his nation-leading 10th save.

GAME 2: RADFORD 9, ETSU 4

Guerra went 3-for-4 with his second homer of the season and Blake Sipe was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in his first career start in the win.

Radford – which was the home team in game two – sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning to grab a quick 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Guerra singled in a pair of runs on a hit to left to get the Highlanders on the board, 2-0. On the next play, Ryan Burgess hit a two-run double to the corner in right to extend the lead to 4-0. Sipe and Hillsinger added two-out RBI singles to push the Highlanders out to a 6-0 advantage.

Sipe, hitting ninth in the order, knocked in another in the third on his hit that scored Brett Mollenhauer and gave Radford a 7-2 lead. Guerra led off the fifth with his blast to right, increasing the lead to six before Hillsinger hit his second run-scoring hit with two outs later in the inning.

Paul Hoilman hit a two-run home run in the seventh for the Buccaneers, closing the gap to 9-4.

Right-handed starter Michael Costello earned his first career win (1-0) for the Highlanders.

NOTES: Cory Turner extended his hitting streak to 7 games in the doubleheader… Turner was 2-for-6 in the two games … Radford opens its Big South schedule on Friday, beginning a three-game series at Charleston Southern.
