MEET NOTES
MEET SCHEDULE
RADFORD, Va. – For the third time this year, the Radford track and field teams will travel to Lynchburg, Va., this time to compete in the two-day Liberty Collegiate Invitational this weekend.
The Highlanders look to get back on track after weather conditions slowed times at the Asics Winthrop Invitational, which also vacated a number of Radford competitors in the finals on the last day. After the second day, Radford had one prelim victory and six top-three prelim performances.
Highlighting the outdoor season thus far is freshman
Amber Church, who qualified for Junior Nationals with a personal-best time of 14.26 in the 100-meter hurdles.
For the fifth time this year, two athletes have competed against each other in the same race, eclipsing the school record in the process. This time,
Kevin Richards and
Phillip Hovatter accomplished the feat at Winthrop and Richards set the new school mark in the decathlon with 5,759 points. Hovatter tallied the second highest point-total in school history at 5,711, jumping Richards' old school mark of 5,688.
Recording their first outdoor victories of 2011 was senior
Britney Whittaker and freshman
Brian Gorwitz. Gorwitz earned his first collegiate triumph with a 15:17.53 time in the 5000m while Whittaker notched a 2:19.48 at Winthrop to also top the field.
Freshman
Diane Wesh will also make her presence known in the sprints, as she won the prelims at Winthrop 57.02 in the 400m, the fastest time in the Big South so far in outdoor.
Showcasing field events is junior
Curtis Hodge, who continues to rank within the top-3 in the hammer throw. He threw 57.60m/189' last meet and placed runner-up.
Justin Smith is also a solid force in the shot put, where he too recorded back-to-back top-3 showings at Coastal and Winthrop.
Multi's will kick off the competition on Friday at 1 p.m. with hammer, javelin and pole vault following shortly after.
