SOFTBALL CONTINUES LEAGUE PLAY AT GARDNER-WEBB


Radford softball continues Big South play this weekend at Gardner-Webb. The squads will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 and conclude with a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Highlanders (19-11, 1-1 BSC) are coming off a road split at Liberty last Saturday and look to rebound from a game two defeat. The Bulldogs (9-15, 1-1) also split in their league opener at Presbyterian last Thursday, winning game two, 3-2.

The teams are in an early three-way tie for second with Liberty sitting two games behind league-leader Presbyterian (16-6, 3-1).

In the circle, the tandem of Jackie Jenkins and Stephanie Dameron have been the go-to pitchers this season.

Jenkins sports an 8-0 mark with a 1.21 ERA and two saves in 57.2 innings of work. She has tossed a pair of shutouts and held opponents to a .204 batting average.

Dameron is 7-2 with a 1.75 ERA and has logged a staff-high 68 innings. The rookie righthander has posted one shutout and held opponents to a .205 batting average.

Leading the way offensively for the Highlanders is Nichole Beall, who is batting .341 with seven doubles, six home runs, 22 RBI and 20 runs scored. She is slugging .659 and has recorded 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts.

The Highlanders have been a menace on the base paths so far this season. Ranked fourth in the NCAA, Radford has swiped 79 bases in 93 attempts and is led by Lauren Williams with 22, which is 10th in the Division I. Overall, 12 Highlanders have stolen one base, with seven notching five or more.

Lead-off hitter Samantha Meenaghan and Morgan Baker lead the way offensively for GWU, as Meenaghan is hitting a team-high .341 with a team-high 15 runs scored, while Baker his posting a .306 batting average with a team-high 15 RBIs and three home runs.

Freshman hurler Jessica Childers paces the staff with five wins, two saves and 60 strikeouts in 68 innings. She struck out a career-high 14 at Presbyterian.

Radford steps out of conference play and returns home for a doubleheader against in-state foe Longwood on April 6 at 4 p.m.
