CLINTON, S.C. – Jackie Jenkins twirled a two-hit gem as Radford completed a three-game sweep of Presbyterian with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon from PC Softball Complex.
The Highlanders (25-13, 6-2 Big South) came into the series two games behind Blue Hose (20-10-1, 5-6) for first place and with the sweep moved into sole possession of the top spot.
Jenkins (W, 11-1) retired 11 straight at one point and faced the minimum amount of batters in five of seven frames for her fourth shutout of the season. The righty allowed a first inning double and sixth inning single, struck out three, walked one and hit a batter.
In two games this weekend, Jenkins did not allow a run in 12.2 innings while scattering six hits and striking out four.
The Highlanders scored the only runs of the game in the fifth as they finally got to PC's Leslie Hensley. A bobble by the third baseman proved costly as
Kristen Shifflett and
Nichole Beall recorded back-to-back RBI singles with two outs.
Hensley (L, 13-6) was the tough luck loser as she surrendered six hits, allowed two unearned runs and struck out two.
After Jenkins streak of 11 straight ended with one out in the fifth, Radford ended the frame with a 6-4-3 twin killing. It was the 24th double play of the season, matching 2009's school record. It was also the 18th ground ball double play increasing on the new school mark.
Shifflett and
Vicki Madden each recorded two hits for the Highlanders.
Radford returns home for a non-conference contest against North Carolina on Tuesday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
