Durham, N.C. – Strong all-around play lifted the Radford women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over North Carolina Central Wednesday evening at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The victory improves Radford to 6-12 overall, while the loss drops the Eagles to 10-11 on the spring.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after taking all three doubles matches. The duo of
Sara Tegner and
Emerald Lauzon recorded their first win in five matches at the final spot, while seniors
Ivana Tomaic and
Mirna Matic secured the doubles point with an 8-4 decision on court two.
Shorty after, the top duo of
Mia Drobnjak and
Petra Dajevic recorded the final doubles match as they tallied their seventh win as a tandem.
In singles competition, the Highlanders continued to put points on the board with straight-set victories from Lauzon, Tomaic and Matic to secure the match.
Tomaic's 6-3, 6-3 decision on court three improved her overall record to a team-best 11-7 on the season.
With the match already decided and only four courts available, the teams decided to play the last two matches to an eight game pro-set in singles.
Dajevic and Drobnjak recorded the final wins for Radford with an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 position and an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot, respectively.
North Carolina Central's lone singles win came from Maria Nedstrom on court five.
The Highlanders return home on Friday for a non-conference match against James Madison at 3 p.m.
