SOFTBALL WRAPS UP SERIES WITH SHUTOUT ON SENIOR DAY

MICKEY DEAN WIN 200TH AS A HIGHLANDER

RADFORD, Va. –
Radford raced out to a 6-0 first-inning lead and three pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Highlanders (31-15, 12-2 Big South) completed a series sweep of Winthrop with a 7-0 victory on Senior Day from RU Softball Field.

Radford blanked the Eagles (15-31, 5-13) in all three games and have recorded four straight shutouts in league play, along with not allowing a run since the first inning of game two against Coastal Carolina (34.2 innings).

In the process, Mickey Dean won his 200th game (200-89) at the helm of the Highlanders.

Jackie Jenkins picked up the win and improved to 15-2 with five innings of shutout ball. She surrendered two hits, two walks and struck out one.

The Highlanders' six seniors contributed in one way or another over the course of the doubleheader, with everyone taking part in the game-three victory

Lauren Williams was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and also made two diving catches. Kristen Shifflett tripled to extend her hitting streak to 14 games and scored a run.

Kellie Snooks and Chelsea Kelley closed out the game with one inning apiece of no-hit shutout relief. Kelley struck out the final batter of the game looking.

Taylor Cunningham (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) and Shannon Keefe (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) each scored a run.

Williams' partner in crime at the bottom of the lineup, Hannah Ojeda was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored from the eight-spot.

Shifflett sparked the first inning with a leadoff triple and scored on a Nichole Beall RBI single up the middle. Beall scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. With the score 3-0, Ojeda stroked a two-run single and Williams followed with a RBI infield single.

Radford's other run came in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Ojeda and Williams.

Chelsea Schoenfeldt suffered the defeat as she allowed three earned runs on four hits with a walk in one inning of work. Ashleigh Jackson was solid in relief, holding the Highlanders to just a run on four hits with two punchouts over the final five innings.

Veronica Berrie and Jackson each recorded singles for the Eagles.

Radford steps out of conference for a home doubleheader against Virginia on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
