RADFORD, Va. -- Radford Softball wraps ups its home portion of the schedule this week, hosting Virginia on Wednesday for a doubleheader at 4 p.m., while concluding its suspended game from March 23 against Liberty on Thursday at 6 p.m.
The Highlanders (31-15, 12-2 Big South) are coming off a three-game sweep of Big South foe Winthrop at home last weekend and have won 10 of their last 12. Radford blanked the Eagles in all three contests, holding them to 11 singles, and have recorded shutouts in its last four league contests.
The Cavaliers (21-25, 4-12 ACC) were swept by No. 22 Georgia Tech in their final two home games of the season on Saturday. Prior to that, Virginia did take two-of-three from Virginia Tech the previous weekend.
Liberty (22-20, 8-3 Big South) dropped a doubleheader at Longwood on Sunday, snapping a season-long eight-game winning streak. Prior the Sunday's contest, the Lady Flames picked up a pair of mid-week sweeps over Hampton and Norfolk State at LU Softball Field. Liberty hosts Virginia Tech for a twinbill on Wednesday before heading back to Radford.
The contest between Radford and Liberty was halted in the top of the eighth with the score tied 3-3 when lighting struck and then a heavy downpour ensued. The Lady Flames were at bat with one out, the bases empty and a 0-2 count on Kaylee West.
This will be a key result for either team as the Highlanders hold a one-game lead over the Lady Flames in the loss column. Radford is one series ahead as Liberty hosts Presbyterian this weekend.
Jackie Jenkins was involved in three of those shutouts, twirling 19 innings of scoreless ball including complete games in game three against Coastal Carolina and the series opener versus Winthrop. Earning Big South Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time, she brought her season total of shutouts to six and lowered her ERA to a Big South-best 1.08.
Hannah Ojeda posted a strong week both offensively and defensively. The speedy rightfielder batted a team-best .538 with three doubles, three RBI and five runs scored over the course of five games last week. Recording a hit in all five contest, she registered two multiple-hit games against Coastal and Winthrop, including a two-hit, two-run, two-RBI performance to close out the week. In the field, she recorded three outfield assists and eight putouts. She threw out two runners attempting to go first to third and another trying to stretch a single into a double.
At the plate,
Kristen Shifflett and
Nichole Beall are batting .337 and .336, respectively. Beall has tallied 13 doubles, nine home runs, 32 runs and 38 RBI, all team bests. Shifflett is currently riding a career-high 14-game hitting streak with six doubles and 19 RBI.
Radford will step out of conference this weekend for a doubleheader at Elon on Saturday at 1 p.m. Following finals week, the Highlanders concluded their regular season May 7-8 in a league series finale at Charleston Southern.
