SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT ELON

Game One | Game Two

ELON, N.C. – Radford was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at Elon on Saturday afternoon from East Field. The Highlanders (34-17) fell, 5-1 and 11-10 to the Phoenix (26-22).

Elon scored five runs in the first three innings and Erin O'Shea held Radford to three hits as the Phoenix took game one, 5-1.

In game two, the Highlanders squandered a two four run leads and a three-run seventh inning advantage, falling 11-10.

Nichole Beall was 4-for-7 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in the twinbill.

O'Shea went the distance for the Phoenix. She did not allow an earned run, striking out eight and walking two.

Carleigh Nester and Camille Hill each were 2-for-3 with two RBI. Nester homered and doubled.

Hill staked the Phoenix a 2-0 lead in the second with two-run single up the middle.

Radford cut it to 2-1 in the third on RBI double to deep center by Beall, but she is stranded as O'Shea struck out the next three batters.

Two home runs in the third pushed the Phoenix's lead to 5-1 where it would stand for the rest of the game.

Jackie Jenkins suffered the loss as she lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing an earned run on two hits. Kellie Snooks tossed the final 4.2 innings, surrendering three runs on six hits with a strikeout.

In the second contest, Elon took advantage of three errors in the seventh and rallied with four runs, the final on a sac fly Pam DelPizzo to complete to comeback, 11-10.

Taylor Cunningham paced Radford's 13-hit attack with a 3-for-5 performance with a double, home run and three RBI.

Radford got things rolling in game two, staring with back-to-back doubles by Kristen Shifflett and Nichole Beall to grab a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Michelle Beall and sac fly by Vicki Madden pushed the lead to 3-0 after a half-inning.

Three two-out runs pushed the Highlanders advantage to 6-2, responding to the Phoenix's two-run third. With two outs, Shifflett homered to left. Following a walk to Nichole Beall, Cunningham deposited a two-run shot for the four-run lead.

Radford answered with two of its own the top of the sixth, scoring a pair of on a two-out fielder's choice grounder to short. With the bases juiced, Jessie Hutchens hit a chopper to short, but the flip to second was late and two runs scored as the second baseman held onto the ball.

A three-run long ball by Graham made it an 8-7 contest after sixth.

Two more two-out runs in the seventh cushioned Radford's lead to 10-7, which included a RBI double by Cunningham.

However, the Highlanders could not hold onto the lead as the Phoenix took advantage of the miscues for the win.

Jenkins suffered the defeat in game two as she allowed two runs, both unearned, on one hit in the seventh.

DelPizzo, who hit the game-winning sacrifice fly, picked up the win as she, allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks in 3.1 innings.

Radford is off for finals next week and will return to action for its final conference series at Charleston Southern on May 7 and 8.
