WADOLOWSKI SCORES AS TIME EXPIRES IN OT WIN OVER ST. FRANCIS

BOX SCORE

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Playing just miles from her hometown, Madonna Wadolowski (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) sent Radford field hockey home with a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Francis Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Stag Classic hosted by Fairfield University.

Wadolowski, who grew up six exits (I-95) south of Fairfield, scored on a corner just as time expired in the first extra session to give the Highlanders (4-1) the their second straight overtime win over the Red Flash (1-3) in as many years.

"This was a wonderful experience to play in front of all my family and friends," commented Wadolowski. "Being far away from home, my friends and family can't come to a lot of games, so it was great to have them all there and support me especially being that it is my senior year."

Fellow senior, Melissa Register (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) played an important role with two second half goals, the first multi-goal game of her career. Register and senior Marlee Schramm (Mantua, N.J./West Deptford)  led all players with seven shots apiece with Wadolowski chipping in with five.

Wadolowski's second goal of the year, assisted by Schramm, finished off an overtime that saw Radford dominate from start to finish. However it was unable to solve Red Flash keeper Jill Dicola as she made nine of her 16 saves in the first 14:59 of the 15-minute overtime.

"Their support was key in motivating me to keep going during overtime," said the senior Wadolowski. "I am happy that I was able put in the game-winner with everyone there. Of all the games to score in, this one in my home state meant the most."

Following a St. Francis shot to start the OT, Radford rattled off 14 unanswered shots with the last finally finding the boards. Radford almost won it right off the bat, but Register's shot just seconds minutes into the overtime ringed off the post.

The Highlanders out shot the Red Flash, 26-17 while Saint Francis held a slight advantage in corners, 13-11.

After a scoreless first half, the teams would each find the cage twice in the second. The Red Flash took the lead early in the second half when Carissa Makea scored on a corner just 6:05 into the stanza.

Register tied the contest in the 56th minute, as she flipped a shot to the far post past Dicola. Just 4:27 later, Radford grabbed a 2-1 lead as it ran a successful counter attack following a St. Francis corner. Register scored on a breakaway that was set up by freshman Sydney Myrdal (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam). It was Myrdal's first collegiate assist and point.

However, Autumn Pellman, on a corner, would post the equalizer for the Red Flash a minute later.

Radford weathered an early St. Francis barrage of shots in the scoreless first half. During a nine-minute span between the ninth and 17th minute, the Red Flash registered seven of their eight first-half shots, but freshman keeper Becca May (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) made all three of her stops to keep them off the board.

May, making her first collegiate start, would finish with six saves, including her final one just 1:23 into overtime.

Radford heads to James Madison on Tuesday for a contest with the Dukes at 7 p.m.
