FINAL RESULTS
WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Improving five positions from the previous day, the Radford women's golf team concluded the Great Smokies Intercollegiate on Tuesday, directed by even-par final rounds from senior
Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) and freshman
Alexandra Austin (Burke, Va./Robinson Secondary).
During the two-day event, Okamoto and Austin carded identical rounds at 76 and 72, respectively, to finish in a tie for 21st place at 148 (+4). The duo climbed 26 positions with their performance today and for the second straight tournament, Okamoto's 72 tied a career-low, as did Austin.
Sitting in 18th place (307) following the first day, Radford improved by 11 strokes and combined for a 296 in the final round to jump five spots up the team leaderboard.
“We weren't very sharp yesterday and dug ourselves in a hole. Today, on the other hand, we came out and played much better,” commented
Jeff Beeler.
Kirsty Condon (Lincolnshire, England/Kesteven and Sleaford) ended up with a 152 (+8) to grab 56th out of 124 competitors and teammate
Paige Reese (South Hill, Va./Park View) recorded a 155 on the scorecard.
The event was played on the par-72, 5,932-yard layout at Waynesville Golf Club and Inn, which was given a four-star rating by Golf Digest.
Eastern Kentucky took home the team championship by matching both the tournament's lowest single team round (284 - previously held by host Western Carolina in 2008) and the tournament's best 36-hole score of 576. The individual medalist came from Western Carolina in Sofie Kvarnstrom.
The Highlanders have a long layoff before their next tournament on Oct. 10-11 at the Spider Invitational in Richmond, Va.
