FIELD HOCKEY FALLS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME AT LONGWOOD, 3-2

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford was defeated by Longwood in double overtime, 3-2, in a NorPac field hockey match, Tuesday evening from the Athletics Complex. Courtney Poole (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) recorded both of the Highlander (4-6, 0-2 NorPac East) goals.

Stacy de Grandhomme tallied the game-winner in the 96th minute, completing Longwood's (5-6, 1-0 NorPac) comeback victory.

Poole broke a scoreless deadlock in the 27 minute, putting home the third shot during a flurry in front of the cage to give Radford a 1-0 advantage.

It was the only score of the first half in which the Highlanders controlled most of the play. They held a 14-5 advantage in shots and 4-1 in corners. Longwood keeper Kaye Goulding made nine save keeping Radford at bay, while her counterpart Sidney Encarnacion (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) stopped three shots for the Highlanders.

Poole gave Radford a 2-0 lead after corralling her own rebound and firing into the open cage at 45:11. Her team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season moved her into a tie for fifth with 24 goals and eighth in points with 50.

The Lancers evened the match with two goals just 57 seconds apart in the 59th minute.

Radford had a golden opportunity in the second overtime, but Goulding denied a 3-on-1, sliding over for a kick save.

Encarnacion finished with eight saves, while Goulding totaled 14. Radford out shot Longwood, 23-17.

Radford returns to action on Friday with its second straight NorPac road test at Appalachian State. Match is scheduled for 7:45 pm.
