FIELD HOCKEY ERASES THREE-GOAL DEFICIT BUT FALLS IN OVERTIME, 5-4

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – Radford field hockey showed some resilience as it erased a three-goal second half deficit, which included the equalizer with no time on the clock, but fell short in overtime to Longwood, 5-4, in a NorPac East contest, Sunday afternoon from RU Hockey Field.

Trailing 4-1 after an early second half goal, the Highlanders made some adjustments that finally paid off when sophomore Paige Doughty and freshman Marianna Parker scored less than three minutes apart to make it 4-3 with just under 15 minutes remaining.

With time winding down, Radford earned its ninth corner of the contest and took advantage. Freshman Stacey Mackintosh bounced a reverse stick inside the far post with no time on the clock sending the Highlanders into overtime for the fourth time in five conference matches.

On Mackitosh's team-best fifth goal, junior Alayna Versage was credited with an assist, her team-leading third of the season.

However, the Lancers (4-11, 3-1 NorPac East) regrouped and Jessica Diaz finished contest at the 8:04 mark of overtime with her second goal of the match.

Radford (1-13, 1-4) held a 9-4 advantage in corners. Longwood held a 16-13 edge in shots, including all four in overtime.

Doughty started the rally when she redirected a cross from freshman Jana Bayer at 52:49. Following another surge into the circle, Parker whacked home the third goal after the first two attempts were denied. It marked Doughty's and Parker's second goals of the season.

Longwood took a 3-1 lead into halftime after breaking a 1-1 tie on goals from Nicole Deckard (16') and Stacey de Grandhomme (33'). Brittany Diaz opened the scoring just 1:03 into the match for the Lancers.

The Highlanders had evened it four minutes after Diaz's strike when sophomore Sydney Myrdal deflected sophomore Kellen Keys' direct shot off a corner high into the netting for her first collegiate goal.

Meg Mitchell made five saves for the Lancer, while her teammate Kelley Fay had two defensive saves. Freshman Jillian Lates started the second half and made four saves.

Radford hits the road on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. contest at nationally-ranked Wake Forest.
