HIGHLANDERS BLANK MOUNTAINEERS IN HOME FINALE, 2-0

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – Goals by junior Alayna Versage and freshman Marianna Parker, coupled with four saves from junior Sidney Encarnacion keyed Radford to a 2-0 victory over Appalachian State in NorPac field hockey action from RU Hockey field, Sunday afternoon.

The victory by the Highlanders (2-14, 2-4 NorPac East) in their home finale assured them a spot in the 2012 NorPac tournament.

Encarnacion earned her first shutout of the season, making all her saves in the second half, including her last one on the Mountaineers' (3-13, 0-6) untimed corner and the end of the contest.

Radford took a 1-0 lead into the break on Versage's first collegiate goal. It was their only shot of the period as the Mountaineers outshot the Highlanders, 3-1 and held the edge in corners, 4-3.

On the Highlanders' first corner, Versage put them on the board 8:03 into the match. After her insert, she received it back from sophomore Amy Kinkler and flipped it over the sprawling keeper.

Following a run across and into the left side of the circle, Parker doubled Radford's lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute, poking home her own rebound. It was the rookie's third goal of the season.

The Highlanders ended the match with advantages in both shots (10-8) and corners (8-6), as they charted nine shots and five corners in the second half alone. Versage and Parker recorded a team-best three shots apiece.

Sarah Anderson made five saves for the Mountaineers, while Jessi Stuart registered a game-best four shots.

Radford hits the road for its final three regular season contests, starting with Longwood on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6:00 p.m.
