MACKINTOSH SCORES TWICE; FIELD HOCKEY EDGED AT LONGWOOD

BOX SCORE FARMVILLE, Va. – Freshman Stacey Mackintosh scored twice, but an early second-half goal by Stacey de Grandhomme proved to be the difference as Longwood edged Radford, 3-2, in a NorPac field hockey match from the Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.

Mackintosh evened the score twice as Radford answered each Longwood goal to enter the break tied at two-apiece.

After Christina Verhulst gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead on a corner just 8:38 into the match, Mackintosh struck on a corner in the 22nd minute. After her initial shot was stopped, she banged home her own rebound.

The Lancers (6-12, 5-2 NorPac East) regained the lead with six minutes remaining when Jessica Diaz took advantage of a Highlander (2-15, 2-5) turnover and fed de Grandhomme, who tipped it in the cage for a 2-1 lead.

Mackintosh, who charted all six Radford shots, scored her second goal of the half, ripping home a direct corner with 1:35 left in the stanza, bringing the Highlanders even once again. Sophomore Ashton Cox assisted on the rookie's team-best seventh goal of the season.

de Grandhomme struck for the game-winner in the 46th minute, which would hold up for Lancers.

The Highlanders earned two untimed corners, but could not duplicate the magic from the previous matchup, as they were unable to generate a shot and fell by one goal for the fourth time in five league contests.

Radford held the edge in corners, 8-7, while Longwood won the shot battle, 13-6.

Radford will play its final conference match on Friday, Oct. 26 at Davidson. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
