WOMEN’S GOLF SET TO BEGIN SPRING CAMPAIGN AT KIAWAH’S ISLAND INVITE

LIVE RESULTS

RADFORD, Va. The Radford women's golf team is set to begin their 2012 spring campaign in Kiawah, S.C. on Feb. 26-28 when they compete in the Edwin Watts Kiawah's Island Invite.

The event will feature three days of competition with 18 holes played each day.  Radford will be one of 33 teams in the tournament, which will be hosted by the College of Charleston.

The fall reached many heights, as the team stroke average (308) is on pace to shatter a school record – currently 317 set in 2010-11.

“I'm anxious to see how this team responds right out of the gates,” mentioned head coach Jeff Beeler.  “We've always had a tough go from the start and I think this team has prepared well in the off-season to eliminate the inconsistent rounds to start the spring. The first two events are by far the strongest fields I've seen in my three and a half seasons here, so I'm excited to see how we compare to the elite teams in our region.”

Prior to the Wofford Dual, freshman Alexandra Austin led the squad with a 75.3 stroke average and finished at 75.4.  Jade Okamoto recorded a 75.3 average over five events.  Okamoto's average ranked second in the Big South, while Austin finished third.

Austin shot the second lowest round of any golfer in the Big South with a 69 in the Spider Invitational.  In a dual with Hollins University, Austin took medalist honors with a four-over 75.  In addition, the freshman had two sub-par rounds and two Top-10 showings.

Okamoto started off the year with a runner-up showing at the Bison Invitational, including a career-lows for 18 (72), 36 (145) and 54-hole scores (218).  It stood as her second career runner-up performance.

Kirsty Condon finished the fall strong, with a career-low 150 that led to a Top-10 showing at the CSU Wendy's Invitational.

Paige Reese helped the team score by placing third or fourth among Radford players in every tournament.  Her best performance came at the Spider Invitational (T-30th).

Heading into her last five tournaments as a Highlander, senior Amy McCollum hopes to build upon a 239 in the Spider Invitational that led to a season-best 30th-place showing.

“Alex and Jade had a tremendous fall and I look for them to continue that play this spring.  I also expect Amy, Paige and Kirsty to have outstanding springs. I have six girls on this current roster that can all contribute in major ways every time we tee it up.  A couple of them didn't play as well as they liked in the fall which is alright because I know they are burning inside to get out there and do big things.”

“Our league is extremely tough and always has two teams make it as at-large bids, but we truly feel that we have the talent and games to be in the mix.  I really believe that there could be five teams vying for the conference title and I believe we're one of them.”
