RADFORD, Va. – Virginia Tech broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning, cruising to a 13-5 win over Radford in front of a season-high 1,032 fans on Tuesday night.
Jeff Kemp went 3-for-4 and scored twice for the Highlanders (17-15), while
Matt Hillsinger went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
Johnny Morales and Chad Pinder had three hits each and hit three-run homers for the Hokies (23-12), who won their fifth game in a row. Morales' blast came in the fifth, which was hit into the wind in left field and broke a 2-2 tie. Pinder launched his three-run homer in the sixth inning, extending the Virginia Tech to lead to 10-4.
Like the first meeting, the Highlanders scored first in the third inning. With two on, a misplayed ball in left field off a single by Hillsinger plated
Josh Gardiner.
Matt Mack put down a squeeze bunt down on the next play to bring home Kemp and make it a 2-0 lead for Radford.
Tech got on the board on Pinder's groundout to the right side in the fourth before taking control with a six-run fifth, highlighted by the Morales home run.
With Tech ahead 7-2, the Highlanders closed the gap to three runs in the bottom half of the fifth on RBI doubles by Hillsinger and
Cory Turner, making it a 7-4 lead for the Hokies. However, Pinder's homer in the sixth made it a six-run lead.
Patrick Scoggin got the win (1-1) for Virginia Tech, striking out four while allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings.
Keith Fritz, who started and allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings, took the loss (2-4).
Radford continues its six-game homestand on Wednesday against North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m.
