WOMEN’S TENNIS TO BATTLE GARDNER-WEBB IN BIG SOUTH QUARTERFINALS

RADFORD, Va. – Coming off one of the most successful regular seasons in school history, Radford will take on fifth-seeded Gardner-Webb in the opening round of the 2012 Big South Women's Tennis Championships Thursday at the Asheville Racquet Club South.

The winner of the Highlanders' quarterfinal match will advance to face the victor of the contest between top-seeded Winthrop and eighth-seeded UNC Asheville on Friday at 10 a.m.

Looking for its first Big South Tournament crown since 1990, Radford finished the spring 16-6 overall and 4-4 in the league.

The fourth-seeded Highlanders are led by the freshmen quartet of Hannah Crawford (14-8), Gemma Valls (16-6), Taylor Newman (14-8) and Meg Napolitano (19-3), who account for 63 of their club's 85 singles victories in 2011.

Napolitano, who went 7-1 in conference singles matches on court six, is tied for the league lead with 19 singles victories.

In addition, Radford has posted a 41-24 doubles record, while capturing the team point in 14 of its 22 matches.

The first-year duo of Crawford and Napolitano lead all Big South doubles teams with an 18-4 record, while Petra Dajevic and Valls went 14-4 at the No. 3 position.

Radford edged the Runnin' Bulldogs 4-3 earlier this spring when the two clubs met in Boiling Springs.
