SOFTBALL TRAVELS TO WINTHROP FOR LEAGUE SERIES

Live Stats | Live Video (Saturday games only / weather permitting)

Following a midweek non-conference doubleheader, Radford Softball returns to league play on the road this weekend with three contests at Winthrop. The Highlanders open the series with a twinbill starting at noon (originally scheduled for 1 p.m.) on Saturday, April 21 and conclude with a single game set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Highlanders (25-14, 9-3 Big South) are currently atop the Big South standings, two games ahead of Charleston Southern in the loss column. The Eagles (15-30, 3-12) enter the weekend after dropping 2-of-3 to Gardner-Webb in their last series.

Radford holds a slight 32-29 edge in the all-time series, having won the last six contests and 10 of the last 12 meetings. The Highlanders swept the three-game set last season with three shutouts at RU Softball Field. Since 2006, either Radford or Winthrop has played in the league's championship game, each winning two titles.

In their last outing, the Highlanders split with UNCG at home dropping a nine-inning affair, before rebounding with a shutout in the nightcap. Following the defeat, junior Jackie Jenkins twirled a three-hit shutout and sophomore Jessie Hutchens homered and knocked in both runs in a 2-0 victory. It was Jenkins' third blanking of the season and Hutchens' third long ball of the year.

Game one featured a 3-for-3 performance from Nichole Beall, but despite holding the Spartans to two hits, walks led to three of UNCG's four runs and Radford left 10 runners on base in the 4-3 defeat. Beall recorded two doubles, homered, knocked in two, scored twice and also drew a pair of walks.

After the weekend, Radford returns home for a pair of midweek ACC matchups. The Highlanders will host Virginia Tech in a rescheduled game on Tuesday, followed by a doubleheader against No. 21 North Carolina on Wednesday.
