BOX SCORE
ROCK HILL, S.C. –
Mark Peterson pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings, Radford's offense rapped out 14 hits and the Highlanders rolled past Winthrop 9-0 on Saturday to clinch a Big South series win.
Five batters had multiple hits for Radford (23-16, 8-4 Big South).
Brett Mollenhauer,
Jeff Kemp and
Westyn Baylor knocked in two runs each.
"That was a very professional and business-like approach that we took today," head coach
Joe Raccuia said. "It was in every aspect of the game today - we competed on the mound, threw strikes and defended exceptionally well. It was our mindset to keep the foot on the gas today - after we went up, we started playing small ball with sacrifice bunts and flys, moving guys over and trying to finish the opportunities that we had."
Peterson only faced one threat from the Eagles – a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the first inning. He allowed a hit and walked two to fill the bases, but was smooth the rest of the way – Peterson allowed just four base runners from the second inning on. He struck out six, walked three and gave up four hits to earn his third win (3-1).
The Highlanders put runs on the board in each of the first five innings. Radford scored two in the first – Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Zach Costello, and
Matt Hillsinger's ground ball to the right side scored Mollenhauer.
In the fourth Costello led off the inning with a double, setting up Kemp's RBI single to put Radford up 5-0. Kemp stole second and went to third on the errant throw down before coming home on Hillsinger's single, extending the lead to six runs. The Highlanders loaded the bases, then added another run on Baylor's pinch-hit sacrifice fly.
Four players had a hit each for Winthrop. Tyler Klitsch took the loss (2-4), allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Radford travels to Virginia for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday night. Winthrop hosts Wake Forest at home on Tuesday.
