WOMEN’S GOLF CONCLUDES FIRST ROUND OF BIG SOUTH; CONDON ALL-ACADEMIC

RESULTS
Condon All-Academic

GREENWOOD, S.C. – After the first round of the 2012 Big South Women's Golf Championship, Radford currently sits in fourth place, while Jade Okamoto and Paige Reese paced the Highlanders by each placing in the Top 10.  Kirsty Condon was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team at the awards banquet Monday evening.

Collectively, the Highlanders handed in a 310 on the par-72, 6,009-yard layout at The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor.  It was the fourth round this spring at 310 or below.

After shooting +2 over the front nine, Okamoto used two birdies against three bogeys over the back nine to finish her first 18 holes of action three-over 75.  Playing in her last Big South Championship, Okamoto led all players with four birdies, recorded on the par-3 fourth, par-5 eighth, par-4 11th and closed the round with a four on the par-5 18th.  She is currently tied for 7th and just four shots out of first place.

Reese was extremely consistent all day.  She went one-over on the first nine holes, birdied the par-4 10th to open the back nine and entered the clubhouse at four-over 76.  Reese finds herself in 10th place, joining Okamoto at the top of the leaderboard.

According to history, Okamoto is in a position for success.  Her round today marked the seventh time since 1992 a Radford top finisher carded a 75 or lower in the opening round of the championship.  In three of those six previous occurrences, that player finished the 54-hole tournament in the individual Top-10 and one (Stephanie George, 2001) brought back medalist ho
nors.

Condon penciled in a 79 (+7) and tallied one birdie on the par-5 13th.  She sits in a tie for 23rd place.  At the awards banquet Monday evening, Condon was named to the all-academic team for her perfect 4.0 GPA in a German major.

Freshman Alexandra Austin finished her day at eight-over 80 and sits in 26th place and Amy McCollum rounded out the Radford competitors with an 86.  McCollum led Radford at one-under on par-3 scoring and was second in the field in that category.

Fans can follow the action live on golfstat.com.  McCollum will hit the tee box first for Radford at 9:30 to get second-round action underway on Tuesday morning.
