LIBERTY BEATS BASEBALL 13-8 TO EVEN SERIES

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – Alex Close hit two homers and Zack Haley added another, leading Liberty's 16-hit attack in a 13-8 win over Radford in the second game of a Big South series on Friday night.

Brett Mollenhauer went 3-for-4 and scored twice to lead the Highlanders (28-25-1, 12-11 Big South), extending his hitting streak to 17 games.  Matt Mack added a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Haley, Andy Smith and Ian Parmley had three hits each for Liberty (37-18, 13-10), which got hits from eight of the nine batters in the lineup and scored in each inning.  Both Haley and Parmley scored three times.

Close, who entered the weekend tied for the Big South lead in home runs, hit a solo blast to lead off the third inning.  He socked a two-run shot in the eighth inning, his 12th, to help the Flames extend the lead late.  Close finished the game with four RBIs.

Haley's solo homer (2) came in the ninth inning.

Four pitchers worked for Liberty in the game – Jared Lyons got the win (3-4), working three relief innings.  Starter Brooks Roy went 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs but only two earned – the Flames committed four errors.

Radford also used four pitchers – Mark Peterson took the loss (4-3), he allowed six runs in three innings in his shortened start as the Highlanders looked to prepare their starting pitching for next week's Big South Tournament.  Tyler Costello, Radford's usual Saturday starter, went four scheduled relief innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits.  The Highlanders committed three errors in the game.

Liberty put two runs on the board in each of the first three innings and had an 8-3 lead before Radford scored three fifth-inning runs on a three-base error on Mack's two-out hit with two on, clearing the bases and allowing Mack to score.

The series concludes Saturday at 2 p.m., with Radford recognizing its senior class prior to the start of the game.
