BASEBALL FALLS TO EAST TENNESSEE STATE, 8-4

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – East Tennessee State scored a run in five separate innings to take an 8-4 decision over Radford in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday evening.

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh, Radford (26-21-1) used four hits and scored three to reduce the deficit to one, 5-4.  Zach Costello drove home his second RBI of the game on a one-out single to get things started.  Matt Mack singled to right field to plate another run and a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Phil Bondi gave Radford its fourth run of the game.

East Tennessee State (22-26) countered back, however, with its second solo shot to left center by the designated hitter Dylan Pratt to stretch the lead back out to 6-4 in the top of the eighth.  The Buccaneers would one more in the inning and a third solo homer in the ninth to finalize the scoring.

Costello went 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI, while Mack also recorded a 2-for-4 night at the plate and added an RBI of his own.
Brett Mollenhauer extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-4 effort.

The Buccaneers plated runs in the sixth on three consecutive one-out singles to push their advantage to 5-1.  In the third, Matthew Scruggs hit a solo shot over the left field fence to give ETSU a 2-0 advantage.

With the bases full in the top of the second, ETSU got the scoring started when Corey McPherson scored Pratt by way of a sacrifice fly to center.

Radford got its first run on the board in the third inning.  Josh Gardiner led off with a double down that hugged left field line.  Following a fly out, Gardiner stole third and crossed the plate on a deep sacrifice fly off the bat of Costello, reducing the deficit, 2-1.

The Highlanders' starter Jake Palese took the loss and lasted 5 1/3 innings.  He retired eight straight at one point in the third and keep that streak alive through the fifth.  Will Carter got the win for ETSU, as he was one nine pitchers on the night.

Radford will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. for a three-game set with Campbell this weekend, May 11-12.
