RADFORD, Va. -- Radford field hockey welcomes NorPac newcomer Liberty for its 2012 home opener on Sunday from RU Hockey Field. The 1:00 p.m. tilt is the first league contest of the season for both squads.
The Highlanders (0-5) enter the tilt looking to grab their first win of season after some tough competition from the outset. Radford has played some strong opponents over its first five contests, including its most recent battle with nationally-ranked Old Dominion.
A familiar collegiate and in-state foe for Radford, Liberty will be making its first trip to the New River Valley for field hockey. It is the first-ever league contest for the Lady Flames (2-3), who are in their inaugural season of NorPac competition.
A LOOK AT RU: After the season's opening week, freshman Stacey Mackintosh was named NorPac East Co-Rookie of the Week after netting the Highlanders first goal of the season against Central Michigan... Sophomore Jennifer Hedrick assisted on Mackintosh's strike for her first collegiate helper and point... Sophomore Paige Doughty found the back of the cage for the first time in her young career when she tallied a goal against the Monarchs... Junior goalkeeper Sidney Encarnacion leads the league with 54 saves (10.8/game); she stopped a career-high 17 against ODU... Five different Highlanders have recorded a defensive save.
A LOOK AT LIBERTY: The Lady Flames are in their second season of NCAA Field Hockey and the newest members of the NorPac... Liberty joined the league on July 1, 2012 and is the ninth overall member and will play in the East division... The Flames have dropped their last two contests... On Aug. 26, they defeated Lehigh on the road to earn their first win over a Division I opponent.
LAST MEETING: These two squads met in 2011 with the Highlanders defeating the Lady Flames, 3-1, on the road in Liberty's inaugural game.
UP NEXT: Radford will take on NorPac foe and No. 12 Stanford on Sept. 22. The Highlanders and Cardinal will face off in a non-league match in Chapel Hill, N.C. at 1 p.m.
