FIELD HOCKEY UPENDED IN DOUBLE OT BY LIBERTY, 2-1

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – In the 2012 NorPac opener, Liberty's Abby Basom scored four minutes in to the second overtime to give the Lady Flames (3-3, 1-0 NorPac East) a 2-1 win over Radford in the Highlanders' home debut on Sunday afternoon from RU Hockey Field.

Freshman Jana Bayer recorded her first collegiate goal for the Highlanders (0-6, 0-1) and junior Sidney Encarnacion made nine saves, including five in the second overtime stanza.

Basom ended the contest at 89:09 when she poked in a loose ball during a Liberty penalty corner.

The Lady Flames controlled the extra hockey, recording all 13 shots and six corners, but Encarnacion came up big until the loose ball was poked past her.

Bayer (27') notched the first goal of the contest with just over eight minutes left in the first half. After nice run into the circle, freshman Stacey Mackintosh sent a hard ball across the face of the goal, which found Bayer, who deflected it in the open cage.

Natalie Barr (39') evened the contest for the Lady Flames 3:03 into the second half when she blasted a reverse stick through the five hole.

Barr had a chance to win it just before Basom's goal, but she rung her penalty stroke off the post.

Each team recorded eight shots and Liberty held a slight advantage (5-4) in corner during regulation. Brooke Morley made four saves, three in the first half for the Flames.

Sophomore Kellen Keys charted a team-best three shots, while Barr notched a match-high nine.

Radford returns to action on Saturday when it takes on league-foe and No. 12 Stanford in Chapel Hill, N.C. at 1:00 p.m.
