ULMO NETS SIXTH, MEN'S SOCCER PLAYS TO 1-1 TIE WITH ELON

ELON, N.C. – Bernardo Ulmo scored for the sixth time in as many matches and Ryan Taylor made six saves as Radford earned a 1-1 (2 OT) non-conference draw at Elon on Tuesday night.
With the Highlanders (3-2-3) down a goal in the 88th minute, a foul was whistled against Elon in the penalty area, setting up Ulmo for the equalizer. The goal was the third Radford tally in a row for Ulmo, who scored two in Saturday's win over Campbell. He has six total goals this season.
Ulmo nearly tied the score 14 minutes prior to his penalty kick when he rang the crossbar on a 73rd minute shot.
Chris Thomas, the nation's second-leading scorer entering the week, netted his 11th of the season in the 49th minute for the Phoenix (5-2-1) on a penalty kick.
Thomas had a chance to score late in the match, moments before Ulmo's penalty kick, but he was stopped by Taylor.
"Elon is a very talented and well-coached team that I believe will have a good season, so a tie on the road is a solid result," head coach Marc Reeves said. "We started very poorly and really relied on Ryan [Taylor] to keep us in the game with some fantastic saves. I thought the second half and overtime we played well and created some great chances that could have seen us win this game."
For the match, Elon held a slight 16-13 shot advantage – in the game's opening 30 minutes the Phoenix forced Taylor to make three saves.
In the extra sessions, Radford outshot the Phoenix 4-1. The Highlanders kept the ball in Elon's defensive half in the first four overtime minutes with a pair of shots and three corner kicks. Ulmo had a shot in the 94th minute that was saved by Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean. Stephen Hudgens had the other three shots for the Highlanders.
"With some injuries going in and then getting a few knocks in the game, it was great to see some guys start or come in and play very well," Reeves said. "In particular we got a real boost tonight from four sophomores (Kyle Beach, Ramzi Dridi, Hudgens, Nicholas Valencia). I am happy for them and this is very good to see for our team as we go into a more hectic three-games-a-week conference play."
Radford returns to Big South action on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. match at Gardner-Webb.
