JENKINS BIG SOUTH PRESEASON PITCHER OF THE YEAR; RADFORD PICKED FIFTH

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Radford senior twirler Jackie Jenkins was named Preseason Big South Pitcher of the Year, while the Highlanders were picked fifth as the league announced its annual preseason poll on Monday afternoon.

Jenkins, who is the two-time Big South Pitcher of the Year, has garnered the preseason recognition for the second consecutive season. She is coming of a 2012 season which saw her tie for second in shutouts (5), third in wins (17) and saves (3), fourth in ERA (2.16) and fifth in opponent's batting average (.219). A two-time first-team all-conference selection, Jenkins posted a league-best 10 wins, 1.37 ERA and fewest walks per seven innings (1.28) in Big South games. Jenkins received seven first-place votes and a total of 15 points.

The four-time Big South regular season champions are coming off a 34-21 (16-5 Big South) campaign in which they became the first league program to win four straight outright titles. In addition, Radford won every conference series in 2012 and 28 of the last 29.

The Highlanders received 44 points, three behind Big South newcomer Longwood (47). Defending tournament champion, Coastal Carolina, was tabbed the preseason favorite with runner-up Charleston Southern projected to finish second and Campbell third. Following Radford was Gardner-Webb in sixth, Liberty in seventh and Winthrop eighth. Presbyterian rounded out the voting in ninth.

Radford opens its 2013 campaign on Feb. 13 with a doubleheader at No. 22 North Carolina. Game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
