HIGHLANDERS CONCLUDE DAY ONE OF LIBERTY KICKOFF

LYNCHBURG, Va.
– Radford track and field kicked off its indoor season for the sixth straight year at the Liberty Kickoff on Thursday evening.
 
On day one, senior Phillip Hovatter (2661) and sophomore Devon Drake (2414) sit in third and fourth place in the heptathlon, while senior Amber Church is currently in fifth in the pentathlon. Hovatter and Church each recorded two second-place finishes.
 
Individually, Jazmine Banks and Ashlen Veatch tossed their way to second and third place distances in the weight throw and freshman Tess Rogers recorded a third-place finish in the pole vault by tying the school record (10-06.00). The second of Banks' five attempts traveled a personal-best 16.41 meters (53-10.25).
 
Hovatter and Drake opened 2-3 in the 60-meter dash with Hovatter edging his teammate at the tape by .01 seconds with a career-best 7.31 seconds.
 
Following the long jump and shot put, the heptathletes finished out the day with the high jump. Hovatter leaped into a second-place showing (1.85/6-00.75), while Drake followed with a personal record to (1.82/5-11.50) land in fourth. The duo will complete their event tomorrow on day two of the meet.
 
Church opened strong in the 60-meter hurdles, but was edged at the line for first by .01 seconds posting a 9.04 in her first event of the season. Freshman Jessica Shelton was not far behind as she prevailed with a third-place finish (9.24). Church also added a runner-up showing in the long jump (5.21m/17-01.25).
 
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Maggie Kooken took home the pentathlon's shot put title with a first-place throw 11.22 meters (36-09.75).
 
Radford concludes competition at the Liberty Kickoff tomorrow, December 5.
