GEORGE MASON EDGES WOMEN’S TENNIS, 4-3

FAIRFAX, Va. – Despite winning the doubles point, Radford only won two singles matches, which allowed George Mason to come from behind for the 4-3 decision in nonconference women's tennis action Saturday night at Montclair Country Club.

The Highlanders (0-4) jumped out to the 1-0 lead by way of winning the doubles point for the first time this season. Gemma Valls and Taylor Fay easily took care of business in the third slot, breezing by Erdenesuren Erdenebat and Ekaterina Desiatnikova of the Patriots, 8-2.

RU won the point once sophomores Taylor Newman and Meg Napolitano earned a hard-fought 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles over Kiersten Pappas and Brittany Pilkington.

Evening her record at 2-2 on the year at the top flight, Valls went the distance in recording a 6-4, 5-7 (10-7) triumph over Maya Hicks. Earning her first singles win of the dual season, Allison Michael dispatched Andrea Londen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.

However, George Mason (3-5) picked up wins at the second, third, fourth and fifth positions to edge the Highlanders in the end.

Radford stays on the road for its next battle, a Feb. 25 dual at Elon. The Highlanders and the Phoenix square off at 2:00 p.m. from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
