VALLS WINS AT NO. 1 SINGLES, WOMEN’S TENNIS STUMBLES AT DAVIDSON

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Improving her record to 18-6 in dual matches for her career, Gemma Valls secured the lone point for Radford as the Highlanders dropped a 6-1 nonconference women's tennis decision to Davidson Friday evening at the Knobloch Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping all three matches for the doubles point. Meg Napolitano partnered with Taylor Newman at No. 1 doubles, but lost to the tandem of Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer (8-4). The duos of Valls / Hana Babic and Taylor Fay / Allison Michael suffered 8-3 setbacks in their respective matches at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

Valls was able to put Radford (0-1) on the board when she dispatched Moniz-Soares in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Michael put up a tough battle with Blake Nickles at the sixth spot. The freshman forced her opponent into extra games in both sets, before falling (7-5, 7-6).

Continuing their visit to North Carolina, the Highlanders travel west to Boone for their second straight matchup with a SoCon foe, Appalachian State. First serve between the Mountaineers and RU is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Varsity Courts.
