HAMMOND'S TOP-5 PACES WOMEN'S GOLF AT LOW COUNTRY INTERCOLLEGIATE

ROUND 1  |  INDIVIDUAL

HILTON HEAD, S.C. –
Due to blustery conditions on the coast of South Carolina, scores at the Low Country Intercollegiate were higher than normal. Nonetheless, the Radford women's golf team managed to overcome adverse playing conditions to post its sixth top-10 showing of the season Monday at the par 72, 5,822-yard Moss Creek Country Club.

Originally scheduled as a two-day, 54-hole outing, Mother Nature forced tournament officials to reduce the event to 18 holes.

Behind co-medalist Maria Kjelldorff's 6-over 78, Western Carolina carded a 328 to win the 16-team tournament by four shots over Princeton (332). Dartmouth (335) placed third, followed by host Wofford (338), DePauw (339), Akron (340), defending tournament champion Appalachian State (341), Western Kentucky (341) and Gardner-Webb (342).

The Runnin' Bulldogs were one shot clear of RU, which returned a 343 to the clubhouse to finish 10th. The Highlanders were two swings clear of Presbyterian College (345), which was followed by Brown (349), South Carolina State (352), USC Upstate (359), The Citadel (371) and Ursuline College (402).

Pacing Radford was Hayley Hammond, who posted a career-best finish with an 81 to tie for fourth, three strokes back of Kjelldorff and Dartmouth's Sarah Knapp. The redshirt junior's previous career-best showing was at the Highlander Invitational, where she carded a 7-over 151 for 36 holes to tie for sixth.

Kirsty Condon tied for 20th, while Alexandra Austin concluded in a tie for 38th. Paige Reese finished in a tie for 56th and Katie Parrott tied for 73rd in the 89-player field.

The Highlanders return to the links in one week for Appalachian State's Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is contested at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
