DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP LEADS TO SERIES WIN AT CAMPBELL

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Radford swept a pair of games Saturday at Campbell, 5-2 in game one and 3-2 in the nightcap, to win the series from the #27 ranked team in the country and move to 14-11 overall and 4-2 in the Big South.

GAME 1 - Michael Boyle (4-1) took a shutout into the sixth and gave up just two hits to one of the top offensive teams in the nation. He earned the victory with 5.0 innings pitched and a pair of runs given up striking out five and walking three.

The Highlanders broke open a scoreless game in the sixth with three runs. Josh Reavis, Ryan Burgess, and Alexander Lee each walked with one out, and Reavis scored the game's first run on a balk by Campbell's Logan Self. Self came in to relieve starter Hector Cedano, who had given up the three free passes to load the bases.

Zach Woolcock delivered a two-run double to plate Burgess and Lee to give the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.

Boyle started the sixth on the mound, but walked the first two batters. Jeff Maxwell came in from the bullpen and got out of the inning with limited damage. The Camels scored twice, but were never able to tie the game qualifying Boyle for the victory. Maxwell worked 1.1 innings and set up Daniel Bridgeman, who earned an extended appearance save finishing the final 2.2 innings and giving up three hits.

Josh Gardiner led off the seventh with a single and advanced all the way to third on an error by left fielder Aaron Vogt. Blake Sipe knocked in Gardiner to give the Highlanders a 4-2 lead.  Sipe added another insurance RBI in the ninth on a sacrifice fly that scored Chris Coia, who led off the inning with a walk.

The win over the #27 ranked Camels snapped their nine-game winning streak and dropped CU to 23-4, 6-2 on the season. Radford improved to 13-11 and 3-2.

GAME 2 - Zach Woolcock and Jeff Kemp hit solo home runs, and the Highlanders used seven pitchers to shut down the high-powered Camel offense in a 3-2 victory that gave RU the doubleheader sweep and the series victory.

Woolcock gave the Highlanders the lead in the second with his first long ball of the season, and Kemp homered in the fifth to give RU a 2-0 lead. The roundtripper for Kemp was his sixth of the season.

Keith Fritz started the game on the hill for RU, but only faced two batters. A line drive off his pitching arm forced him out of the game, and Ryan Meisinger (1-0) came on in emergency relief and earned his first win of the season.

Meisinger went 2.2 innings and gave up four hits with a couple walks, but left with a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Jeff Maxwell worked another 1.1 innings as he did in the first game of the day, and surrendered an unearned run on just two hits. Oliver Powers and James Woods each recorded two outs, and Nygeal Andrews went a third of an inning. Andrews gave up a run on two hits and turned the game over to Michael Costello with one out in the seventh.

Costello was stellar in his 2.2 innings to earn his fifth save of the year.

The Highlanders scored a run in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead when Josh Gardiner and Kemp executed a double steal of home and second base, respectively.  The defense took over from there and held on for the 3-2 win.

Gardiner, Kemp, and Alexander Lee completed a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

RU is now 14-11 and 4-2 in the Big South. Campbell falls to 23-5 and 6-3.

The Highlanders travel to East Tennessee State on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
