NEWMAN EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO LIFT RADFORD PAST LANCERS

RADFORD, Va. – With the dual tied at 3, Taylor Newman delivered the match-winning point at No. 1 singles to push Radford past Longwood, 4-3, in Big South women's tennis action Wednesday evening from the Radford University Tennis Complex.

With the victory, the sophomore extended her eight-match win streak and gave the Highlanders (5-11, 2-4 Big South) their second-straight conference triumph.

After dropping the doubles decision on court two, Radford answered with victories on courts one and three to claim the 1-0 lead.

Gemma Valls and Taylor Fay battled back from an early deficit at No. 3 doubles to score an 8-5 win over Hannah Hill and Nicole Parker. Newman and Meg Napolitano delivered the clinching win at the top spot, outlasting Marta Pinyol and Allison Shulman, 8-6.

Following a win at No. 3 singles for the Lancers (4-11, 0-6 Big South), Fay countered with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the fifth position to help RU regain the lead at 2-1.

Momentum shifted drastically when Longwood prevailed on courts six and four to grab a 3-2 edge with two matches remaining.

Nonetheless, Valls had an answer for the Highlanders as she downed Malin Allgurin in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) for the equalizer. The Barcelona, Spain native's victory set the stage for her fellow classmate to drive Radford into the winner's circle.

Newman did not disappoint as she grinded out a three-set (6-3, 3-6, 7-5) win over Pinyol at No. 1 singles.

The Highlanders are back in action Friday, April 5 at 2:00 p.m. from the Radford University Tennis Complex.
