HIGHLANDERS DROP SEASON OPENER AT WILLIAM & MARY

BOX SCORE

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Radford field hockey dropped its season opener at William & Mary, 5-0, on Friday evening from Busch Field.

The Tribe grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute and took that lead into halftime. Senior keeper Sidney Encarnacion made four of her nine saves and was helped out by defensive saves from three different Highlanders. Junior Jennifer Hedrick stopped one early to keep the game scoreless. Senior Alayna Versage and freshman Ava Mirzadegan registered back-to-back stops late in the stanza to keep Radford within striking distance.

However, two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half gave William & Mary some breathing room. Radford settled down after that surge before the Tribe capped off the scoring with a pair of late goals.

Sophomore Marianna Parker tallied both of Radford's shots.

The Highlanders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they take on Miami (Ohio) at 11:00 a.m. The contest will be held at Longwood's Athletics Complex.
