FARMVILLE, Va.
– Radford field hockey was defeated by defending MAC champion Miami, 6-1 on Sunday morning at the Athletics Complex on the campus of Longwood University.

Sophomore Stacey Mackintosh scored the first goal of the season for the Highlanders (0-2), while Alyssa Logan notched two goals for the RedHawks (1-1). Sophomore keeper Jillian Lates did not allow a goal and made a career-high seven saves in the final 15:56 of the contest.

Behind two goals in the first nine minutes, Miami took a 3-1 lead into halftime. Radford was able to weather the early surge by the RedHawks and cut its deficit in half with just over seven minutes left in the half. Mackintosh found the back of the cage for the Highlanders' first goal of the season on a corner. Set up by junior Ashton Cox's insert, Radford's leading goal scorer from a season ago registered the 10th career goal of her young career.

However, Miami would reestablish its two-goal advantage (3-1) despite being a player down as it struck on a corner as time expired in the period. In the second half, the RedHawks would add three more goals for the final tally.

Senior Sidney Encarnacion started in goal for the Highlanders and made four saves in 54:04 of action.

Radford heads to Bloomington, Ind. next weekend for contest against Saint Louis on Sept. 7 and host Indiana on Sept. 8. Game times are 2:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
